Mengel was selected as an apostle in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS Church) by church president W. Grant McMurray. (The RLDS Church was renamed Community of Christ in 2001.) She was ordained on March 31, 1998, making her one of the first two female apostles in RLDS–Community of Christ history. In 2005, she retired from the Council of Twelve Apostles and became the church's first Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer. She became the 18th president of Church Women United in July 2004.
