Gas Interconnection Poland–Lithuania (GIPL), also known as Lithuania–Poland pipeline, is a proposed natural gas pipeline interconnection between Lithuania and Poland that is expected to be finished by 2019. The pipeline is a part of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan project.[2]
History
In August 2014, Polish and Lithuanian gas transmission system operators both submitted applications for EU support for the project.[3] The construction works are planned to start in 2016 and to be finished by 2019.[4] The expected capacity of the pipeline is 2.3 billion cubic metres per annum with possibility to expand it to 4.5 billion cubic metres per annum.[5] Expected cost of the project is €471 million.
In late 2016 Polish partner Gaz-System announced suggestion to change the route of pipeline in Polish side. The proposed new system would start in Wysokoje near the boarder with Belarus. The main motivations of the changes was that overall price of the project would be cheaper (it would reduce the length of the pipeline) and there wouldn't be any changes needed for compression stations.[6]
