ForgeRock is a multinational identity and access management software company headquartered in San Francisco, U.S.A.[4] The company develops open source identity and access management products for cloud, social, mobile, and enterprise environments.[6] Mike Ellis is the CEO of ForgeRock.[1] ForgeRock also has offices in Bristol, London, Grenoble, Vancouver (USA), Oslo, Düsseldorf, Paris, Sydney, and Singapore.[7] ForgeRock has raised $52 million in venture funding from Accel Partners, Foundation Capital, and Meritech Capital Partners.[8]
When Sun Microsystems was acquired by Oracle in January 2010, Sun’s identity and access management software was scheduled for phase out in favor of Oracle’s in-house product.[9] ForgeRock was founded by a group of ex-Sun employees in February 2010 to continue to develop Sun’s open source identity software.[10][11]
ForgeRock provides identity and access management through its primary product, the ForgeRock Identity Platform.[12] The product is built on Sun’s open source identity and access management projects.[13] The ForgeRock Identity Platform includes Access Management (built from the OpenAM open source project), Identity Management (built from the OpenIDM open source project), Directory Services (built from the OpenDJ open source project), and Identity Gateway (built from the OpenIG open source project).[14] OpenAM provides access management, OpenDJ is an LDAP directory service, OpenIDM is used for identity management, and OpenIG provides an identity gateway for web traffic and application programming interfaces (APIs).[15]
The source code — which has a Sun Microsystems, ForgeRock or community copyright — is freely available for use, under the terms of the Open Source Common Development and Distribution License. ForgeRock also provides pre-compiled, verified binary files,[11] which are free of charge for use in proof-of-concept and prototype systems, but require a paid ForgeRock subscription for use in a production system.[9]
