Fate/Apocrypha (フェイト/アポクリファ Feito/Apokurifa) is a light novel from Type-Moon's popular Fate/stay night franchise, written by Yūichirō Higashide and illustrated by Ototsugu Konoe. The first novel was released on December 29, 2012 at Comiket 83. The second volume was released on August 16, 2013. The third volume was released on December 29, 2013. The fourth volume was released on May 30, 2014. The fifth and final volume was released on December 30, 2014. A manga adaptation by Akira Ishida was announced, with the first volume being released on April 15, 2016.[2]
Plot
The story is set in a parallel world to original Fate/stay night, where the Holy Grail was removed from Fuyuki City after the Third Holy Grail War and thus the events of Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero never happened. It focuses on the conflict between the two opposing factions, Red and Black, each summoning seven Servants and the Grail itself summoning a special Ruler-class servant as a mediator of the Holy Grail War. The Red Faction members are mages sent by the Clock Tower Mage's Association, while the Black Faction members are part of a Romanian group of magi called Yggdmillennia.

Development
Fate/Apocrypha was originally introduced as a canceled project for an online game, with various details and character designs by various artists collected in Fate/complete material IV Extra material. On November 2011, it was announced as a new project called Fate/Apocrypha,[3] and in early December, Higashide confirmed on Twitter that he is writing Fate/Apocrypha as a light novel.[4] On December 15, 2011, in the seventh volume of Type-Moon Ace magazine, it was first published as a short story penned by Higashide as the first chapter.[5] Although some story elements were present, the short story itself has no relation to the final version of the story presented in the novels. The original planned number of books was four, but on May 2, 2014, Higashide confirmed that the story was eventually extended to five books.[6] The now-defunct original online game project has since been rebooted as Fate/Grand Order.
