Félix V. Matos Rodríguez is an historian, professor, academic administrator, author,[1] and noted Puerto Rican scholar. Matos served as the Secretary of the Department of the Family for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. He is the current President of Queens College, City University of New York.

Early life

Félix was born and raised in a middle-class neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with his parents, Marta (a high school Spanish teacher) and Félix (an engineer).[2] He grew up with two brothers and grandparents and great grandparents.[3] He graduated from Colegio San Ignacio High School in San Juan[4] and moved to the East Coast to pursue higher education.

Education

He began his college studies in Latin American culture and history at Yale University. He graduated cum laude from Yale and was accepted to Columbia University graduate school, where he earned his doctorate degree in history.[5]

Professional career

Dr. Félix V. Matos Rodríguez is the President of Queens College, City University of New York. He served as President of Eugenio María de Hostos Community College - CUNY from 2009-2014.[6]

Matos Rodríguez was Secretary of the Department of the Family for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and a Senior Social Welfare and Health Adviser to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.[7]

He was a professor of Black and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies at Hunter College, CUNY and a director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies.[8]

Matos Rodríguez was a Program Officer at the Social Science Research Council in New York City and a faculty member at Northeastern University in Boston. He has taught at Yale University, Boston College, City College (CUNY) and the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Recinto Metropolitano.[9]

Memberships and Associations

Dr. Matos Rodríguez became an Aspen Institute Ascend Fellow in 2015.[10] He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities[11] and the editorial board of Liberal Education, a publication of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).[12]
