Evil Twin (Hangul: 전설의 고향; RR: Jeonseol-ui gohyang) is a 2007 South Korean horror film. When an accident claims the life of a young girl, Hyo-jin. Her twin sister, So-yeon fell into a coma and awakens 10 years later. Many deaths follows her recovery, and she seemingly takes on her sister's personality traits.

Plot

The movie begins with a young woman being strangled by a man. The man strangling her is accusing her of murder and of hiding secrets. He states that "if she didn't do it then a ghost did." A series of flashbacks show children running and playing in the forest. Two little girls are playing on a bridge and fall into the water. Her frightened demeanor changes into cold and serious one. She says, "Then, cry for it."

Three men are sitting in the dark, drinking, and asking each other what they would do if they saw a ghost. Two of the men laugh and make fun of the third about his stuttering and cowardice. Stuttering, he says that they would be scared too if they meet dead Hyo-jin. The two men stiffen at this, but nervously laugh it off. An awkward silence follow. The third man makes an excuse of having a stomach ache and leaves, complaining about them teasing him. While walking home, he nervously glances at an old bridge and pretends not to see it. He goes to an abandoned shack to relieve himself. He sees a woman sitting in a corner, her long hair covering her face. Frightened, he pulls his pants up and attempts to pretend he doesn't see her. The woman turns her face toward him and suddenly appears in front of him.

The scene alters to a long hallway. The young woman, So-yeon, shown in the beginning of the film, is shown standing at the end of the hall with a mysterious person behind her. So-yeon opens her eyes, revealing the scene to be perhaps a dream. Her mother is beside her and is happy by her waking up. She tells her that she must live for her sister. A doctor is brought to examine So-yeon and informs them that she has lost her memories, distressing the older woman.

A man is walking down a trail in the dark. He takes a glance at the bridge and continues to walk into the mist.

So-yeon is being pampered and tended to by a servant woman, who tells her that she has been in a coma for ten years. So-yeon does not feel the effects and tells her that she feels as if she just had a good night sleep. Suddenly, she has a vision of drowning and develops chest pains after hearing someone outside speaking about a person drowning in a shallow ditch. The servant woman goes outside to scold the people for gossiping. So-yeon asks if a man really was found, drowned to death in a ditch. The male servant tells her the affirmative and then wonders how she knew it was a man, since he never stated the gender of the victim. So-yeon does not answer and runs off, going directly to where the body was, arousing the curiosity of her servants. Far in the distance, she sees the body being carried away. It was the stuttering man from earlier. Another woman spots So-yeon and points her out to her brother, the two men who were shown earlier drinking in the dark. While walking away, So-yeon comments that she saw him drowning.

Three servants in the kitchen are gossiping about So-yeon's miraculous recovery from her coma. They speak about So-yeon's twin sister Hyo-jin. When they were young both girls fell off a bridge and drowned. Hyo-jin drowned to death, while So-yeon was put in a coma. The second daughter, Hyo-jin, was said to be her father's favorite while their mother had always favored the eldest daughter, So-yeon. So-yeon was said to have been a nasty child and often bullied Hyo-jin.

Hearing about So-yeon's recovery, Hyun Sik, So-yeon's fiance, is ordered by his mother to visit her. He is reluctant to see her as he was in love with Hyo-jin and was devastated by her death. Hyun Sik meets So-yeon addressing her coolly and in a detached manner, much to So-yeon's confusion. While out in the garden, So-yeon mentions that she remembers playing with him there when they were kids and it was a happy memory. Hyun Sik also remembers that day. He was happily playing with Hyo-jin. So-yeon finds them, becomes jealous and hits Hyo-jin. So-yeon's bracelet cuts Hyo-jin forearm, resulting in a scar. Angry, Hyun Sik tells So-yeon that it was not a happy memory and walks off.

After a series of mysterious killings, it is then revealed that the one killed in the lake 10 years ago was not Hyo-jin but So-yeon and the living twin is truly Hyo-jin. The secret is hidden by her mother, who has been telling the villagers that Hyo-jin is dead and the one who is alive is So-yeon, but the dreadful spirit of Hyo-jin (the real So-Yeon) comes back to take revenge. Facing the spirit of the real So-yeon in a secret room at their mansion, the real Hyo-jin and their mother run to the bridge, and Hyo-jin falls into the lake. The mother then tries to save her daughter, but as she reaches her hand, she grabs in fact the hand of the spirit of So-yeon, and, finally seeing Hyo-jin, she also grabs Hyo-jin's. Both beg their mother to save them, So-yeon says that it is cold there. Looking at So-yeon, Hyo-jin then tells her mother that she is okay, and the mother lets go of her hand, then falls into the lake to embrace her deceased daughter, and says that she is finally coming to her. Thus they both go deeper into the lake. Hyun Sik is seen to be running to the bridge too. The film ends with Hyun Sik and Hyo-jin, probably married to each other, on the bridge, looking over the lake.
