Eric Michael Esquivel is an American comic book writer and journalist.

Personal life

Esquivel was born in Gurnee, Illinois on February 10, 1987. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Career

Comics

Esquivel is known for a brand of writing that includes references to popular culture as well as sociopolitical commentary.

Esquivel participated in Jon Morris' blog Cornered with an illustration of Marvel Comics' Captain Mar-Vell character. The piece was inked, colored, and lettered by Hannah Nance Partlow (letterer of Boom Studios' Adventure Time: Candy Capers).[1]

Esquivel was a presenter at the 2012 Bleeding Cool Awards, presenting the award for Best Fight Scene of The Last Twelve Months.[2]

Original Characters

Esquivel is the co-creator (Along with artist James Fry) of the Sonic The Hedgehog Villain "The War Walrus", and the co-creator (along with artist Carl Scacchitano)of the Mega Man villain "Dubstep Man".

Prose

Esquivel is the author of the of G.I. Joe novella "Storm Shadow: 21st Century Boy", featuring the popular characters Storm Shadow, and Snake Eyes.

He is the co-creator and author the Roberto Roberto eBook series for Frederator Books.

Journalism

Esquivel has worked as a journalist and critic, writing for such websites as Bleeding Cool,[3] Fox News Latino,[4] Bookmans Entertainment Exchange,[5] and The Tucson Citizen.[6]

Awards

Esquivel's book Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ received a 9.8 rating from Multiversity Comics.

Bravest Warriors #13 received a 4 out of 5 from Comic Bastards.[7]

Freelancers #2 received a 'Rama Rating of 8 out of 10 on Newsarama,[8] scoring higher than that week's issue of Avengers, and Wonder Woman. It currently holds a 4 out of 5 stars[9] rating on Comixology.

Unite and Take Over: Stories Inspired By The Songs of The Smiths, an anthology series Esquivel contributed to, was named Best Comic Book Inspired by a Band in the 2012 "Best Of" issue of The Phoenix New Times.

Esquivel himself was named "One of The Best People In Tucson" by The Tucson Weekly in 2011[10]

In popular culture

British hip-hop artist Akira The Don named his record Unkillable Thunderchrist after Esquivel's book Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ.

Calabrese's music video for "The Dead Don't Rise"[11] features references to Poppa Rock, a character created by Esquivel for the Calabrese comic book series, published by Spookshow records.

Esquivel was drawn into Boom Studios' Regular Show #7 by regular series artist Allison Strejlau.[12]
