Conservative Party leadership election, 2005

Following the resignation of Michael Howard as Conservative Party leader on 6 May 2005, David Cameron announced his candidacy for the position on 29 September 2005. The new leader would be decided by ballots of MPs, where the lowest-placed candidate would be eliminated. When there were two candidates left, all party members were balloted.

On 6 May 2010, David Cameron led the Conservative Party in a general election for the first time. On 11 May, he became Prime Minister, leading a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.
