EmCare Holdings Inc., or EmCare, is an American provider of physician practice management services for emergency departments, inpatient physician services or hospitals, acute care surgery, trauma and general surgery, women's and children's services, radiology / teleradiology programs and anesthesiology services. Founded in 1972, EmCare has more than 1,000 contracts with client hospitals in 42 states.

Laidlaw acquired EmCare in 1997.[1] In 2004, Laidlaw sold EmCare and American Medical Response to Onex.[2] Onex formed Emergency Medical Services Corporation as the parent of its two acquisitions. EMSC went public in December of that year.[3] In 2011, EMSC was acquired by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.[4] On June 11, 2013, EMSC changed names to Envision Healthcare Corporation and went public as EVHC.[5] AMR and Evolution Health also are a part of Envision Healthcare Corporation.

Best known for emergency department management and staffing emergency medicine physicians, EmCare now provides outsourced physician staffing and clinical department management, including recruiting, leadership, training, quality improvement and billing/collection services for all major hospital-based specialties. Physician-led practices are maintained at the local level and supported with regional and national personnel and resources for metric improvement such as clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient experience and satisfaction, HCAHPS, PQRS, MACRA, MIPS and other industry measures.

EmCare offers specific medical staffing solutions such as emergency medicine practice management as well as full-scale integrated services which can include multiple services both within and outside of the hospital walls. Its flagship, EmCare’s Door-To-Discharge™ (D2D) model for both emergency and hospital medicine services, uses proprietary, patent-pending technology called Rapid Admission Process and Gap Orders™ (RAP&GO™) with Rounding Charge Capture. The company’s Direct Admit System for Hospitals (DASH) connects hospitals with the patient’s community of caregivers. Through its parent and affiliated companies, EmCare can offer population medicine and population health management services that support health systems and others who seek to provide quality patient care across the broad continuum of healthcare services.
