Dubravko Merlić

Dubravko Merlić (born 28 April 1960[1]) is a Croatian television journalist, producer and author, known for his work as a reporter, editor and anchor on Croatian national television. He is a winner of the 2007 Rose d'Or award for The Pyramid, a competitive talk show created by Castor Multimedia, a TV production company of which Merlić is currently the CEO.

Biography

Early life

Dubravko Merlić was born in 1960 in Zagreb.[1] He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1983, with a degree in literature, and taught Croatian language and literature in an elementary school in Zagreb from 1984 to 1986.[1][2] In 1987 he started his journalistic career with Radio Sljeme.[2]

Television career

In 1990 Merlić left radio and moved to Television Zagreb, now Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT).[1] From 1990 to 1991 he was an editor and anchor of HRT2 news.[1]

From 1992 to 1996 Merlić was the editor and anchor of Slikom na sliku, an evening current events show that earned him the 1995 Journalist of the Year award from the Croatian Journalists' Association.[1][3] Its concept was to show news segments from other television stations from the region, which generated high ratings, but proved politically controversial during wartime.[1][2] Slikom na sliku was under constant political pressure until its cancellation in 1996, which was, according to Merlić, initiated by the Office of the President Franjo Tuđman.[1][2] After the cancellation, Merlić spent nearly two years without any assignments, while being still employed by the Croatian Radiotelevision.[2]

From 2000. to 2001. he also worked as the chief editor of the News and Current Events Programming at Croatian Television.

In 2003 he founded the independent production company Castor Multimedia, whose main aim is the creation of original multimedia content, with special emphasis on the development of TV formats.

His show “The Pyramid” was recognized with the “Rose d'Or” award for the best show in 2007. “The Pyramid” was broadcast in 8 countries.


In 2009 Merlić became a member of the Croatian jury Supertalent, which is the Croatian version of the licensed show Got Talent.

Dubravko Merlić worked as a member of a launching team of the regional cable 24 hours news channel N1 (CNN's SE Regional Partner) where he also performed as a News Director for N1 Croatia. Merlić was responsible for the entire operation of this regional channel in Croatia ( team of over 60 members) and for the coordination of the Croatian N1 with other two N1 channels in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Beside that he also worked as the anchor and the editor of the talk show "Pressing". [4]


Projects

From 1990 to 1991 he worked on Channel 2 News. From 1992 to 1996 he worked on “Slikom na sliku”. From 1998 to 1999 he worked on “Jedan plus jedan”. From 2000 to 2001 he worked as the head of the news program "HTV". From 2001 to 2003 he worked as the director of corporate communications for Pliva. In June 2003, he established Castor Multimedia. In October 2004, he launched the show The Pyramid. In October 2005, he launched the show Counter Angle. In September 2007, he launched the show Stanje nacije.

In 2009 Castor Multimedia produced local version of German TV show Schillerstrase ”MOJA 3 ZIDA” (RTL Croatia). [5]

Awards

In 1995, he was named the Journalist of the Year by the Croatian Journalists’ Association. In 2005, he was awarded the INPUT 2005 award by the San Francisco The Pyramid. In 2007, he was awarded the Rose d’Or (Golden Rose) for best show for The Pyramid.

Books

In 1995, he published the book “Slika na sliku”.

Education

In 1983, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zagreb with a BA in Croatian language and literature.
