Don Goldwater

Donald H. Goldwater, known as Don Goldwater (born c. 1954) is an Arizona Republican Party political activist, and the nephew of the late U.S. Senator and U.S. presidential candidate Barry M. Goldwater.

Goldwater serves as the Legislative District 16 chairman for the Arizona Republican Party. He is also the second vice-chairman for the Arizona PAChyderm Coalition. In 2004, Goldwater served as a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, which renominated the Bush-Cheney ticket.

On August 2, 2005, Goldwater announced that he would be a candidate for governor in the 2006 Republican primary election.[1] On June 27, 2006, The Arizona Republic reported Goldwater with a double digit lead for the Republican gubernatorial primary.[2] However, according to Goldwater's opponent, Len Munsil, Goldwater's delay in qualifying for Clean Elections funding indicated a lack of grassroots political support.

Goldwater ultimately lost to Munsil in the primary on[3] September 12. He garnered 40.7 percent of the vote to Munsil's 49.4 percent. Goldwater hence became the first and only member of the Goldwater family to lose a statewide election in Arizona.

Political history

In 1992, Goldwater was a Republican candidate in the Arizona State Senate in what was then District 6 in Maricopa County. He was handily defeated by John Juppenthal, a former member of the Chandler City Council.[4]
