David Klamen (born 1961) is an American artist and professor of art and philosophy. His art has been widely exhibited in the United States and Europe. Klamen, whose paintings "defy the easy analysis promised by their subject matter,"[1] paints both figuratively and abstractly—sometimes combining the two approaches by incorporating geometric lines or patterns atop his high finished landscapes.[2] Klamen lives in Chicago, Illinois and is represented by Richard Gray Gallery and Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. He is the Chancellor’s Professor at Indiana University Northwest.
Background and early life
Klamen was born in Dixon, Illinois, United States. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1983 and his M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985. He was represented by Marianne Deson Gallery, Chicago early in his career, joined Galleria L’Isola in Rome in 1986, and finally moved to the Richard Gray Gallery in Chicago and New York in the early 1990s.[3] His 20-plus years of exhibiting in Chicago’s Richard Gray Gallery has brought him international recognition; in 2014, the gallery displayed Klamen’s work at Art Basel in Hong Kong, Asia’s largest annual art festival.[4]
Work
Klamen produces art works in multiple mediums including painting, drawing, and over-painted photographs. His works have been exhibited widely and are in the permanent collections of numerous museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Wisconsin; and the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio.[5]
