David D.A. Doman

David Lewis Doman (born August 3, 1984), better known as David D.A. Doman is an American record producer and songwriter from Evanston, Illinois. He started off his career in the mid-aughts working with Chicago underground artists like Mikkey Halsted, Kidz in the Hall, and Bump J. In 2011, after a few years handling drum programming for J.R. Rotem, which landed him a platinum plaque for the writing of JLS’, "Everybody in Love"— he moved to Los Angeles in search of better opportunities.^[1] He is mostly known for producing the songs "Senile" by Tyga, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj and "When I Feel Like It" by Fabolous and 2 Chainz.

Musical career

Doman started playing drums in fourth grade. When he was thirteen, he bought his first machine, the Roland MC-505. In his sophomore year of high school, he traded his Roland MC-505 for a MPC.^[2] Ever since Doman was sixteen, he was always excited to work on music. Everyday he'd just wake up and do the same thing, but he was never bored or tired of it. Doman never really had a musical mentor growing up. In terms of the production, he was self-taught. When he was 18, he got a couple of album placements with Public Announcement, Ghostface Killah, and Trife Da God. Doman and one of his friends drove all the way from Chicago to New York City in a blizzard just to record with Trife Da God. Their rental car got in an accident by an Semi-trailer truck along the way. Back luckily, Paul Cantor, another friend of Doman helped him out in the situation.^[3] His first major label placement as a solo producer was a song called, "Candy Coated Diamonds" by 2 Pistols.^[2]

Doman left Chicago to live in Los Angeles, mainly moved because he wanted to meet Johnta Austin. He emailed him some beats and Austin said, "You should come down". Doman also, almost signed to Sean Garrett's label, Bet I Penned It Music. He had a bunch of other independent interactions. But not enough really got done down there, because he just didn't have enough connections with people. The reason he didn't sign with Sean Garrett was because he didn't think the situation was good enough. Doman couldn't sign to Johnta Austin because he never put even had a label deal to offer him. Polow Da Don, he offered a publishing deal to him, but the numbers didn't look how he wanted them to look and didn't need any mentor ship at the time.^[1]

In 2009, Doman contacted rapper Tyga's former manager on Myspace to send him some beats, so he could pass them to Tyga. Tyga like them a lot. Then two weeks later, Tyga sent Doman the song "Lay You Down", which was from one of the beats he had sent him. In 2012, the song appeared on Careless World: Rise of the Last King.^[1] Other than that song, he also produced "This Is Like" featuring Robin Thicke and "Black Crowns". Doman's close friend and singer Jim Lavigne wrote and sang the chorus on "Lay You Down". He also wrote the chorus and bridge on "This Is Like". Cameron Forbes wrote and sang the chorus on "Black Crowns". "Working with Tyga is always great because I know he's gonna kill any joint he picks from me. He's easily one of my favorite rappers out and he's a super cool dude", says Doman. The same year, Doman also sent him the beat for "Do My Dance"; he called him a few minutes later and told him it was going to be hit. It progressed quickly from there. Other than making the beat, he also wrote the chorus to "Do My Dance".^[3]

In 2013, Doman produced Fabolous' single with 2 Chainz called "When I Feel Like It". Before the record was released, he emailed it directly to Fabolous. He had already had his email address because he produced a song with him and The Game called, "Ferrari Lifestyle" back in 2011. Fabolous called him back quickly and told him that he had made the verse and the chorus already, and a few weeks later Doman found out he had Fabolous' second single for his album, Loso's Way 2: Rise to Power.^[4] In 2014, Doman made the beat for the song, "Senile". It was originally going to a single for Tyga's, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty. But when they showed the beat to Nicki Minaj, she loved it and wanted to put Lil Wayne on the song as well. Tyga thought it was a good idea as well, so it ended up being a single for Young Money's album, Young Money: Rise of an Empire. Speaking on the song Doman says, "I love working with Tyga, I’ll always love getting Tyga singles 'cause I think he’s a dope rapper. So obviously Tyga’s like a big rapper, but then to have two more big rappers on it, Nicki and Wayne — and Wayne’s obviously a legend — is a great honor. It feels real good. The thing that’s cool about it the record too is that the beat has a really unique sound to it. It doesn’t sound like a typical joint. So I think it’s going to get my name out there more as a producer to not just the industry people, but to fans in general".^[2]

Personal life

Doman moved from Chicago and split an apartment in Atlanta. He had gone back and forth between Chicago and Atlanta for about a couple of years, with a friend, who is also a songwriter. Doman explained that, Atlanta didn't have enough restaurants for him, so he moved^[1] and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. On July 5, 2015 Doman married the love of his life, Christina. Christina Doman, aka Tina Monaco is a school teacher who is also a songwriter. Both David and Tina enjoy spending time together in the studio. David has two sisters named, Andrea Doman who is a businesswoman and Emily who is a teacher.^[4]
