Nichols (born 1961), a businesswoman and the favorite of the Tea Party movement, 7,940 votes (59.9 percent) to 5,314 votes (40.1 percent).[2] Phelan then handily prevailed over the Democrat Gavin Vance Bruney (born 1958) of Nederland, 74.4 to 25.6 percent, in the November 4 general election in which Republican candidates again swept all statewide elected offices.[3]
