The Cosmos Copa, originally called Copa NYC, is an amateur adult soccer tournament played in New York City between teams representing different ethnic heritages in a World Cup-style competition.[1]
History
The competition was founded in 2009 by local soccer fans Spencer Dormitzer and Chris Noble.[2] Each team plays under the name of a foreign country, and all players on that team must be from, or have parents who are from, that country.[3]
In 2010, the New York Cosmos took over the tournament, which continued to be run by its founders.[4] The Copa was renamed for the professional club as part of the deal.[5]
Format
In 2014, forty teams competed in the Cosmos Copa. The eight quarterfinalists from the previous tournament pre-qualified for the following competition, while the remaining thirty-eight competed for eight additional places.[6][7]
The 2014 final was held at James M. Shuart Stadium before a North American Soccer League match between the Cosmos and the Carolina RailHawks.[8]
The tournament was not held in 2016.[9]
