The University of Applied Sciences, Coburg commonly called Hochschule Coburg (short Coburg University - until October 1, 2011 University of Applied Sciences Coburg), re-established in 1971, is an engineering university in Coburg, Northern Bavaria with more than 4,400 students (as of WS 2012/13).
Coburg University belongs to the category of reputed Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences. It offers a broad scope of subjects. Young people from over 40 countries study at Coburg University. Coburg University has 75 international partner institutions.[1]
History
The origin of Coburg University date back to the Technical Training School, the Duke of Saxony in 1814 by the architect Friedrich Streib (1781 - 1852).[2]
Administration
The Coburg University is a university of the Free State of Bavaria (Art. 1 BayHSchG).[3]
Academic programs
The university offers a practice-based study programme both in bachelor courses and courses with international qualifications in the faculties of engineering, business administration and social work. Excellent facilities, including computer pools and workshops, are available to the design-based diploma courses of interior design and integrated product design. Every year many people apply for a place to study at Coburg University of Applied Sciences.
The courses offered includes the four areas: Economics, Computer Science & Technology, Health and Social Work & Build, design and style.
They are distributed over two campuses. The design-based courses are conducted in the historic Hofbrauhaus. The other subjects have their rooms on campus Friedrich-Streib-Straße. The campus is located on a hill opposite to the Veste Coburg.
Bachelor
Architecture, Automation and Robotics, Automotive Technology and Management (study of mechatronics and industrial engineering), Civil Engineering (general study of Civil Engineering and energy-efficient building design), Business management, Bioanalysis, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Renewable Energy, Computer science, Interior Design, Integrative Health Promotion, Integrated Product Design, Clinical Curative Education, Engineering Physics (study laser and light technology and study Physical Technologies), Social Work, Insurance Industry, Mechanical Engineering.
The German's Diplom degrees (which are roughly equivalent to a Master's degree) were already phased out. Before implementation of Bologna process in Europe, an excellent Diplom-Ingenieur (FH) could directly proceed for a Ph.D. programme in engineering either at a technical university or at a traditional university.
Master
Analytical Instruments, Measurement and Sensor Technology (AIMS - International Program),[4] Business management, Conservation in cooperation with the University of Bamberg, Design, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Financial Management (International Program), Computer science, Clinical Social Work, Social Work, Strategic Innovation & Insurance Management.
For mechanical engineering graduates, they can opt to study a Master's degree in Development and Management for Automotive and Mechanical Engineering. The degree conferred is Master of Engineering (M.Eng.).
International Program
The AIMS Master’s program combines two cornerstones for success: intriguing modules and international soft skills. It is tantalizing and well-planned curriculum - which has been approved by the Bavarian Ministry of Science and is supported by DAAD. Young engineers have the opportunity to further both their knowledge in the field of sensor technology and their personal abilities.
It is a two years master's program in which first and second semesters are classroom course work with laboratory experiments. In a practical (3rd) semester students have the opportunity to join a company and a team of scientists and engineers developing new products or procedures. This experience may become their first step towards a future career in industry. Final semester is the specially meant for master's research thesis.
Research
All research at Coburg University is application-oriented. Within the six faculties, research projects of the companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as well as state-sponsored assignments are carried out. The students are involved through their seminar papers, final thesis and increasingly by doctorate studies. Within these studies, Coburg UoAS cooperates with national and international universities.
For legal reasons (Article 2 of the Bavarian Law on Higher Education), the research activities of the university are limited to applied research and development projects. The university has extensive contacts in industry throughout the region and carries out numerous technology and knowledge transfer projects.[5] The practical side of the courses at Coburg University of Applied Sciences is particularly attractive. The university’s laboratories enable up-to-date projects to be carried out, often in cooperation with businesses, which also helps to increase external funding. A difference is made here between projects that are seen by the professors as a (voluntary) part of their full-time job and those which they work on part time within the framework of the technology and knowledge transfer. The following are examples of projects carried out from 1996 on-wards or which are current.
Full-time projects: image processing (several projects), electrical measuring techniques, electrical driving engines, biomobility of radionuclides, water permeability of plaster coatings, development of methods of quality management, glass corrosion, benzene, diesel soot, wood dust toxicology and jointless bridges. Part-time projects: building material studies, market research, measurement engineering (various topic areas), quality management, bio-diesel fuel, innovative construction systems, interior design, sensor technology, media analysis, and social science research projects.
Services for students
At Coburg University of Applied Sciences, the international flair of a cosmopolitan university is created by the numerous exchange students from partner universities, foreign students studying for international master’s degrees, and the approximately 200 students at the "Studienkolleg” (college), which prepares foreign university applicants to study at a university of applied sciences in Bavaria.
The "Akademische Auslandsamt” (international office) offers foreign first-year students special services, such as finding accommodation, information about aspects of life in Germany, and help with administrative tasks such as university registration and dealing with authorities.
The intensive, far-reaching student care on offer does a great deal to promote social integration at the university. Excursions and events are organised throughout the term. The personal atmosphere at the university and the good choice of accommodation on campus or in the town make Coburg a particularly attractive place to study. In addition to this, there is a comprehensive range of language courses for German as a Foreign Language on offer, including the opportunity to take the DSH exam (German Language Examination for University Entrance for Foreign Applicants).
