Christian Presbyterian Church in Portugal
The Christian Presbyterian Church in Portugal (Igreja Christa Presbiteriana de Portugal or ICPP in Portuguese) is a small Reformed church in Portugal. It is a fruit of the missionaries of Presbyterian Church in America.[1]
History
In 1979 the Evangelical association Development was formed for the purpose of founding a denomination of Calvinist persuasion and Presbyterian church government. At the time Portugal had no evangelical church that adhered to the Westminster Confession of 1647. After failed the attempt to work with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Portugal which is the oldest non-Catholic denomination in Portugal, they began to create a new denomination, the founded new churches in Lisbon in 1984 and in 1990.
The missionaries begun to work with existing churches, with the Independent Church in Barreiro which was founded in 1955. This church later become part of the Christian Presbyterian Church. The Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Christ (founded in 1970) was a dissenter church from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Portugal, it separated because of the liberalism, the denomination accepted as a member in 1997.[2]
In February 22, 1992 the denomination officially formed as the Christian Presbyterian Church. The church has 4 established congregations and 1 mission station church. In the mid-nineteenth century an independent Presbyterian church joined the denomination in Campo de Ourique in the downtown of Lisbon. Finally in 2005 a Brazilian missionary and his church plant in Nortesat Porto joined the denomination. Now it is led by a Portuguese pastor.[3]
In 2013 with the help of the Presbyterian Church of Australia and the Presbyterian Church in Ireland a new mission church in northern Porto are about to form.[4]
In April 19, 2014 the denomination celebrated the 30th anniversary.[5]
Theology
The denomination accepts the :
- Five points of Calvinism
- Westminster Confession of Faith
- Westminster Shorter Catechism
- Westminster Larger Catechism[6][7]
Interchurch relations
The church maintains relationship with the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the Conservative Presbyterian Church in Brazil. The Presbyterian Church in America missionaries in Portugal works with the ICPP.[8]
