The Chennai city Area Consists of 1,189 km2(459 sq mi) and has population of 8,917,749. Since 1974, an area encompassing 1189 km2around the city has been designated as the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) and the CMDA has been designated as the authority to plan the growth of the city and the area around it.

The CMA falls in three Districts of the Tamil Nadu State viz. Chennai District, part of Thiruvallur District from Tiruvettriyur to ponnamalle Taulk, and part of Kancheepuram District Guindy to Vandalur.
