Charles Abel is a Papua New Guinean politician, who, since August 2007 has served as a Member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea. Abel also currently serves as the Minister for National Planning.

Life and education

Abel completed his secondary education at Immanuel Lutheran College, Buderim in Queensland, Australia. He then completed a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Queensland[1] Abel is an accountant by profession

Political career

Abel was elected to represent Alotau Open at the 2007 general election as an Independent candidate. Abel subsequently joined the National Alliance Party and was appointed the Minister for Culture and Tourism on 29 August 2007. He defected to the opposition in 2010 and resigned as Minister. In August 2011 he was appointed the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry in the Cabinet of O'Neill-Namah. He was re-elected at the 2012 general election as a candidate of the People's National Congress Party and appointed the Minister for National Planning.
