Chandler Xavier Jones (born November 28, 1991) is an American football wide receiver for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at San Jose State.

Early life

Jones was born in Los Angeles, California; his father Mike Jones was a sixth-round pick in the 1983 NFL Draft and played in the NFL as a wide receiver from 1983 to 1989.[1] Mike Jones began a career as a football coach in 1998 and has been offensive coordinator at Tennessee State University since 2010.[2] Jones graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School of Torrance, California in 2009 and lettered in football and track.[1] In the fall 2007 semester of his junior year, Jones lived in Clermont, Florida with family and attended East Ridge High School before returning to California the following semester.[3] At East Ridge, Jones played as a defensive back,[4] and Jones played both wide receiver and defensive back at Bishop Montgomery.[5]

College career

Jones enrolled at San Jose State University in San Jose, California and joined the San Jose State Spartans football team as a non-scholarship walk-on athlete recruited and signed by head coach Dick Tomey.[6] Jones redshirted his freshman season in 2009 and was a roommate of fellow redshirting wide receiver Noel Grigsby.[6] Jones is a justice studies major at San Jose State.[1]

2010 season

Jones first played for San Jose State in 2010 under new head coach Mike MacIntyre. That season, where San Jose State finished 1-12, Jones played in all 13 games and started in three. With 54 receptions for 494 yards and one touchdown, Jones ranked third in receiving on the team. Jones and Noel Grigsby became the first pair of freshmen for San Jose State each with 50 or more receptions the same season.[1] ESPN featured Jones's 37-yard touchdown catch in the September 11 game against 11th-ranked Wisconsin as #10 on SportsCenter's "Top 10" sports highlight compilation.[1][7] In that game, Jones had 8 receptions for 113 yards and became the first San Jose State freshman to receive for over 100 yards in one game in 15 years.[1] The following game on September 18 against Southern Utah, Jones made a season-high 9 receptions, for 37 yards.[1][8] By October 2010, Jones earned a scholarship for the following season.[9] San Jose State recognized Jones as a Scholar-Athlete in 2010.[1]

2011 season

As a sophomore in 2011, Jones played all 12 games and started 9, in a season where the Spartans improved to 5-7 in MacIntyre's second season as head coach. Jones improved to second on the team in receiving with 61 receptions for 566 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, Jones rushed 21 yards on 4 carries and 1 touchdown.[1] On October 14, in a game nationally televised by ESPN as the College Football Friday Primetime game of the week, Jones made the winning 37-yard touchdown reception with 36 seconds left in a 28-27 victory over Hawaii. Jones also scored touchdowns with a 20-yard run and 23-yard fumble recovery.[10] After the game, the WAC named Jones its Offensive Player of the Week.[1] Jones scored his fourth touchdown of 2011 on October 29 against Louisiana Tech and matched his single-game career high in receptions with 9 receptions for 90 yards.[1]

2012 season

Jones reached career highs in his junior season with 691 receiving yards on 54 catches and 11 touchdowns and 67 rushing yards and 5 carries.[1] San Jose State finished its 2012 season 11-2 with a victory in the 2012 Military Bowl in MacIntyre's third and final season as head coach. Jones played all 13 games and started in three.[1] In San Jose State's home-opening 45-13 win on September 8 over UC Davis, Jones had 3 receptions for 34 yards and 2 touchdowns.[8] In each of two games, the September 15 game against Colorado State and November 10 game against New Mexico State, Jones received for over 100 yards and scored 2 touchdowns.[8] On September 22 against San Diego State, Jones made the game-winning 14-yard touchdown on a pass from David Fales in San Jose State's 38-34 win.[11] Jones made an 8-yard, go-ahead touchdown reception in the November 17 game against BYU.[12] On December 27, San Jose State won the 2012 Military Bowl 29-20 over Bowling Green. In the Spartans' victory, Jones made six receptions for 73 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown reception in a third quarter touchdown drive where quarterback David Fales surpassed the 4,000-yard passing mark.[8][13] Jones was a second-team All-WAC selection in 2012.[1]

2013 season

For his senior season, with San Jose State joining the Mountain West Conference (MWC) and having a new head coach Ron Caragher, Jones had 79 receptions for 1,356 yards and a school single season record 15 touchdowns. Jones had three touchdowns each in the games against Minnesota, Wyoming, and Fresno State.[1] In San Jose State's season finale against in-state rival Fresno State, Jones made a 19-yard touchdown reception with 18 seconds remaining before halftime. The extra point put San Jose State ahead 42-41.[14] On November 2, Jones made a single-game career-best 11 receptions against San Diego State.[1] Jones ended his career at San Jose State as the school's career leader in receptions (248) and touchdown receptions (29) and second all-time in receiving yards (3,087).[1] San Jose State finished the season 6-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play and did not get a bowl invite.

Cleveland Browns

Jones signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns on May 12, 2014.[16] The Browns waived Jones on August 4.[17]

Indianapolis Colts

On September 30, 2014, Jones was signed to the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts.[18] He was released on October 21, 2014,[19] and re-signed with the team on October 29.[20] He was cut on November 4.[21]

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jones was signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad on December 16, 2014. He was promoted to the active roster on January 1, 2015. He was released by the team on May 11, 2015.[22]

Montreal Alouettes

Jones signed with the Montreal Alouettes in June 2015 and spent the 2015 season on the team's practice roster.[23]
