Chadan (Russian: Чада́н; Tuvan: Чадаана Chadaana) is a town and the administrative center of Dzun-Khemchiksky District of the Tuva Republic, Russia, located on the Chadan River (in the Yenisei's basin), 224 kilometers (139 mi) west of Kyzyl. Population: 9,035 (2010 Census);[3] 9,454 (2002 Census);[6] 10,775 (1989 Census).[7]
History
In 1873, at the confluence of the river Khondergey into the river Chadan, a Buddhist monastery was founded named Aldee-Khuree. This year is considered the founding year of Chadan.
In 1923, the village by the monastery was named Artaadyt. In January 1929 the Plenum Tuvan People's Revolutionary Party adopted an anti-religious decree, the Aldee-Khuree monastery was closed and destroyed, and the village was renamed Chadan.
In May 1945 Chadan was granted status as a town and became the capital of the Dzun-Khemchiksky District. At this time, near the city a coal deposit was discovered and Chadan began its development of opencast mining.
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Chadan serves as the administrative center of the Dzun-Khemchiksky District.[1]
As an administrative division, it is, together with the arban of Kirsaray, incorporated within the Dzun-Khemchiksky District as Chadan Town Under District Jurisdiction.[1]
As a municipal division, Chadan Town Under District Jurisdiction is incorporated within the Dzun-Khemchiksky Municipal District as Chadan Urban Settlement.[2]
Economy
There are a bread-making and a butter-making plants in the town. Coal is mined in the town's vicinity.
