Central Kitsap Middle School (or CKMS), formerly Central Kitsap Junior High, is part of the Central Kitsap School District of Kitsap County. It is located in Silverdale near Central Kitsap High School.
Demographics
In the 2014-15 school year the demographics were: Asian/Pacific Islander 7.1%, African-American 3.8%, Hispanic/Latino 12.8%, Native American 0.2%, multiethnic 12.6%, and Caucasian 63.1%.
About the School
The school has 41 classrooms, a library, three computer labs, two gymnasiums, a cafeteria, and a separate band and choir facility with adjoining practice rooms. Adjacent to the building are three athletic fields and a track. The school instructs students in grades 6 through 8. About 90% of the school's teachers have taught for five or more years.
The school adopted a middle school model in 2015. The model calls for a 6.5 period schedule to give students more time for help and electives, teachers teaming up mostly by grade level, a structured system to support and teach appropriate behavior clearly and consistently, and strong programs to help students transition from elementary to middle school.
Academics and Programs
Central Kitsap Middle School is home to Central Kitsap School District’s Magnet program for middle school gifted students. The school and three others in Central Kitsap also offer an Aviation Classroom Experience, in which students use simulators to build and fly airplanes. The program was funded by a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Defense. Coursework involves learning scientific concepts, such as drag and lift, and math skills to estimate flight plans and carry out assigned tasks.
The school received a 2013 Washington Achievement Award special recognition for math growth. Washington Achievement Awards are sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. The awards were created five years ago to celebrate the state’s top-performing schools and to recognize achievement in multiple categories. They are based on statewide assessment data for the three previous years.
