Carina Tivan is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.
Publication history
She was created by Jim Shooter and George Pérez and she first appeared in Avengers #167 (January 1978).
Fictional character biography
Carina is the daughter of Taneleer Tivan and Matani Tivan. Carina left home to explore the universe while Matani gave up her immortality causing Taneleer to lose his sanity and become The Collector.[1]
She arrived on Earth taking on the name Carina Walters and, under her father's orders, planned to get close to Michael Korvac as Taneleer saw him as a threat to the Elders of the Universe. However, Carina found herself falling in love with Korvac for real, causing Taneleer to come and kidnap the Avengers in a misdirected attempt to "save" them.[2]
Carina and Korvac married and moved to a small neighborhood in Forest Hills. The Avengers and The Guardians of the Galaxy arrived and confront the couple causing Korvac to reveal his true self and fight, but when he realizes that Carina was afraid of him, he commits suicide.[3] Carina, enraged, fights the two teams herself before Thor kills her.[4]
Hank Pym found Carina's dispersed energy and, confusing it for his deceased wife Janet van Dyne, brought her energy and being back together.[5] After her memories are restored, Korvac returns to reclaim her, but Janet's memories cause her to rebel against Korvac and with the Avengers Academy students manage to defeat him once again.[6]
Powers and abilities
Carina can fire bursts of powerful energy, alter matter on a molecular level, sense alternate universes and possible futures and summon matter from these realities. She can place the consciousness of individuals into other bodies and restore them at will. They can however, be hampered by their desires. When she was revived by Hank Pym, she possessed power that was even greater than Korvac's.
Other versions
In the What If...? series, Carina shows full support in Korvac's fight with the Avengers, causing him to kill them and then resurrect them as his pawns. Carina then stays by Korvac's side as he proceeds to destroy the Elders and the rest of the universe.[7]
In other media
Television
- A version of her named Corrina Walters appears in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes voice by Jennifer Hale. This version is human and has no connection to The Collector. She is a waitress who lives in modern day New York City. Upon hearing that her fiance, Michael Korvac is still alive she rushes over to be reunited with him. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy arrive to inform the Avengers of the threat that Korvac poses as he was abducted by aliens and had unknown experiments done on him. Korvac proceeds to attack both teams and when he refers to them as "monsters", Corrina angrily tells him that he is the monster. Ashamed by his actions in front of his love, Korvac leaves to wander space.
Marvel Cinematic Universe
- Carina appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe played by Ophelia Lovibond. She does not appear to be related to Taneleer Tivan and is instead depicted as his personal abused assistant.[8][9]
- She makes a brief cameo at the end of Thor: The Dark World, introducing Sif and Volstagg to The Collector so that he can hide the Aether, which is actually an Infinity Stone.
- She makes her full appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy where it is revealed that she replaced Taneleer's previous aid, who had failed him and thus became part of the collection. After The Collector explains the significance of the Infinity Stone to the Guardians, Carina grabs the stone declaring "I will no longer be your slave!" Unfortunately for her, the stone's power was too much for her and she was disintegrated, destroying much of the Collector's archive.
