The British Rail Mark 5 is the designation given by Rail Magazine and The Railway Magazine as a suitable classification for the new locomotive-hauled rolling stock for the Caledonian Sleeper.[2]

Background

Mark 5

In 2015, the Caledonian Sleeper service, which had formed part of the ScotRail franchise, was split into a separate operation, with Serco as the new franchise operator. As part of the franchise agreement, Serco was committed to procuring new rolling stock to replace the operation's existing fleet of Mark 2 and Mark 3 passenger coaches. In February 2015, Serco signed a €200m deal with CAF to purchase 75 coaches of five different types.[3] These will be formed into a total of four 16-coach trains, with 11 coaches as spares. The new vehicles will be the first new locomotive hauled passenger coaches introduced onto the British network since the Mark 4 vehicles on the East Coast Main Line as part of the InterCity 225 sets in 1989-1992. The first vehicles are due to be delivered to the UK in 2017, with service entry expected in 2018.[4][5]

Mark 5A

In 2016, TransPennine Express announced the procurement of 126 new vehicles from CAF, including 66 Mark 5 locomotive hauled coaches, to be formed into 13 five-coach sets, hauled by Class 68 locomotives. These will be initially used on services between Liverpool and Newcastle from 2018, before being transferred to other routes upon the delivery to TPE of its fleet of Class 802 bi-mode multiple units.[6][7] Each set will be composed of 1 first class car, 2 Standard class cars, 1 brake standard class car and a standard class driving trailer.[8] In October 2016, production started on these coaches, which were designated Mark 5A.[9]
