Boulevard Mall, which opened in 1962, is a shopping mall located north of the city of Buffalo at the western edge of the Town of Amherst in Erie County, New York, United States. The name derives from its location on Niagara Falls Boulevard (U.S. Route 62), which divides Amherst from the Town of Tonawanda. The Boulevard Mall is a super-regional mall with a gross leasable area of 904,000 square feet (84,000 m²).[1] The importance of Boulevard Mall has decreased over the years as newer and sometimes larger malls, have been built around Buffalo. Nevertheless, the mall remains almost fully occupied with mostly national chains and has been expanded several times. JCPenney added a large three-story store in 1970 (the third floor contains offices and storage), a small southern extension was added in 1978, a food court was added in 1994 and Sears added a store in 2000. The mall underwent a major renovation in 1997. The Boulevard Mall was the first indoor shopping center in Buffalo, New York, and lies in the heart of a large commercial section that has grown up around it. The once-popular food court was demolished in May 2015 to make way for the addition of a Dick's Sporting Goods. In June 2015, the last store left from the mall's original opening, The Bootery, a small shoe store noted for its fire house decoration theme, permanently closed. Because of its proximity to the border of Canada, Boulevard Mall is a frequent destination for Canadian shoppers.
