Blakdyak was a former Filipino singer-comedian, he was "The King of Pinoy Reggae".
Early Life
Born Joseph Amoto-Formaran on July 25, 1969 in Olongapo City, Zambales. Blakdyak's music is reggae with ska and spiced up with novelty. "It must have something to do with my roots," he justifies the strong liking for reggae. Blakdyak's American serviceman- father (who was once stationed in subic Naval Base in Olongapo City where he met Joey's mother) is half-Jamaican. Reggae beat was born in the Carribean island of Jamaica.
Career
Blakdyak started singing in high school in Castillejos, Zambales (Philippines). He began to earn money from singing when some comedian-performers included him in their shows performing in provinces. He soon migrated to Manila and formed his own band. In 1997, Viva Records discovered the Rastafari guy and immediately signed him up to do an album.
With his chart-topping singles "Good Boy" and "Noon at Ngayon", Blakdyak has become the first local solo reggae act to achieve tremendous success in the entertainment field.
Recently, Blakdyak (Joey Formaran in real life) received his first Platinum Record Award for his first album "Noon at Ngayon". Prior to receiving this award, the prestigious Awit Awards concluded him the Best Novelty Act awardee and Best New Male Performer winner. Not bad for someone whose music is not as popular as pop tunes or dance tracks.
"I write songs with humorous lyrics because it is more fun to listen to. And I'm really a funnyman myself," he says.
Indeed Blakdyak's original songs contain serious messages although delivered the funny way like the songs "Noon at Ngayon" and "Good Boy".
To date, Blakdyak has a very strong following trooping to his gigs to get a good view of his live act. Everybody simply enjoy his music from the original cuts down to his interpretation of Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain", Michael Bolton's "To Love Somebody" and Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight".
Now, Blakdyak has gone a long, long way from being the opening act to become the main performer.
Personal Life
He was married to non-showbiz wfe Twinkle Estanislao-Formaran with 4 children.
