Red Velvet (Hangul: 레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment. The group debuted on August 1, 2014, with their digital single "Happiness". The group is composed of five members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri.

Since their debut, Red Velvet has experienced notable success and recognition. In September 2015, the group's first full-length album, The Red, topped the Gaon Album Chart and the Billboard World Albums Chart.[1] Red Velvet has received a total of eleven music awards, including two awards for choreography; Best Dance – Female and Best Dance Performance – Female Group, as well as three new artist awards.

Red Velvet members have also made television appearances; Irene as a host of Music Bank,[2] Yeri as a host of Show! Music Core,[3] and Joy on the fourth season of variety show We Got Married.[4][5]

History

Pre-debut

Seulgi was the first member to be cast as an S.M. Entertainment trainee through an audition in 2007, while Irene was cast in 2009, and Yeri in 2011. In 2012, Wendy and Joy were cast through the S.M. Global Auditions in Canada and Seoul respectively.[6] Irene, Seulgi and Wendy were rumored to debut as a group in July, which was then confirmed by S.M. Entertainment.[7][8][9] With the addition of member Joy, the four-member group would debut as Red Velvet, S.M. Entertainment's first girl group in five years since f(x).[10]

2014: Debut with Happiness and Be Natural

On August 1, 2014, Red Velvet made their official debut stage on the music program Music Bank.[11] Their debut single, "Happiness", was digitally released on August 4.[12] The song was penned by Yoo Young-jin and composed by Will Simms, Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), Chris Holsten, and Anne Judith Wik (Dsign Music). It was described as an urban Europop song with a strong synth sound and an African tribal beat.[13]

The original music video for "Happiness" gained more than 2 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours of release before being removed due to controversy over problematic background images and replaced with an edited version. "Happiness" was the second-most viewed K-pop music video worldwide for the month of August.[14]

Red Velvet released their second digital single "Be Natural" and its music video on October 13.[15] The song, which includes a rap verse by NCT member Taeyong, is a remake of the 2000 song by S.E.S., S.M. Entertainment's first girl group.[16] The music video for the song was directed by Kwon Soon-wook and Shim Jae-won, choreographed by Kyle Hanagami, and features original choreography seen in a pre-debut teaser of Irene and Seulgi, which they performed as part of S.M. Rookies.[17][18] The group started their promotions on October 9, making their first appearance on the music program, M! Countdown.[19]

2015: New member Yeri, Ice Cream Cake, and The Red

On March 11, 2015, former S.M. Rookies member Yeri was officially announced as part of the group.[20] On March 15, the group's first mini-album Ice Cream Cake was released.[21] The group promoted with double lead singles "Automatic" and "Ice Cream Cake" for which the music videos were released on March 14 and 15.[22]

On March 19. the group held their album showcase on Ice Cream TV, a program streamed through Naver Music and hosted by SHINee's Minho.[23] On March 27, they won their first music show trophy on KBS's Music Bank. The album went on to become the best selling album by a girl group in South Korea for the first half of 2015 on the Hanteo Chart.[24]

In August 2015, Red Velvet held their first U.S. performance during the annual KCON convention and music festival in Los Angeles, California.[25]

Red Velvet's first full-length album, The Red, was released on September 9, 2015, with a total of ten tracks including the lead single "Dumb Dumb".[26] The album was an immediate success which was received positively by critics: Billboard's Jeff Benjamin called The Red "an impressive, solid debut album", stating that it "indicates big things for the act that needs to follow in the footsteps of their beloved female label mates Girls' Generation and f(x)."[27] The Red debuted at #1 on Billboard's World Albums Chart and South Korea's Gaon Album Chart,[28] and also appeared in Billboard's list of the "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015", which described the album as "one of the year's most enjoyable and experimental pop LPs."[29]

"Dumb Dumb" peaked at number three on Billboard World Digital Songs chart, making it the best-selling K-pop song in America of the week. The single also topped the list of the "Top 20 K-pop Tracks of 2015" by Dazed, which stated that the group has "surpassed their idol competitors" and "marked a monumental, career-crowning musical tornado".[30] The music video for "Dumb Dumb" was included as the only non-English language entry in Rolling Stone's "10 Best Music Videos of 2015".[31]

On December 18, the group took part in S.M. Entertainment's special winter project Winter Garden, alongside label-mates F(x) and BoA, releasing a digital single titled "Wish Tree".[32][33]

2016: The Velvet and Russian Roulette

Red Velvet's second mini album The Velvet was intended to be released on March 16, 2016, but ten minutes before its scheduled release, S.M. Entertainment announced that the music video and album's release would be delayed "to guarantee a high quality of work".[34] The album and its title track "One of These Nights" (Korean title: 7월 7일) was released on March 17, 2016.[35] The album showcases the smooth R&B-influenced "velvet" side of the group's concept and is a direct follow-up album to The Red, which highlighted the group's bright and bold "red" persona.[36]

Red Velvet released their third extended play Russian Roulette on September 7. The album contains seven tracks, with the lead single titled "Russian Roulette".[37] On September 13, 2016, Red Velvet took home their first music show win for Russian Roulette on The Show.[38]

Artistry

Concept

The group's name represents its concept, defined by two different images (Red and Velvet) portrayed in their music and performances. "Red" signifies their vivid and bold image, whereas "Velvet" reflects their classy and toned-down side.[39][40]

Among their title tracks, "Happiness", "Ice Cream Cake" and "Dumb Dumb" falls under the "Red" concept. "Be Natural", "Automatic" and "7월7일 (One Of These Nights)" are on the "Velvet" side of the spectrum, while "Russian Roulette" is the combination between "Red" and "Velvet" concept.

Irene (Hangul: 아이린) was born Bae Joo-hyun (Hangul: 배주현, Hanja: 裴柱現[41]) on March 29, 1991 in Daegu, South Korea.[42][43]

Before debuting with Red Velvet, she appeared in several music videos of S.M. Entertainment's artists, including Henry Lau's "1-4-3 (I Love You)", and Kyuhyun's "At Gwanghwamun".[6][44] From May 2015 to June 2016, she co-hosted Music Bank with Park Bo-gum.[45] Irene made her acting debut in August 2016 in the web drama The Female Employees of a Game Company as the female lead Ahreum.[46] On 14 October 2016, it has been confirmed that Irene will be hosting of a new fashion talk show called Laundry Day.

Seulgi (Hangul: 슬기) was born Kang Seul-gi (Hangul: 강슬기) on February 10, 1994 in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.[42][47]

Before debuting with Red Velvet, she appeared in the music video for Henry Lau's "Fantastic", from his album Fantastic.[6] She was also featured on the song "Butterfly", from the same album. In January 2015, she starred in a S.M. Entertainment musical School Oz, playing the lead role of Dorothy.[48] In July 2016, she released the song "Don't Push Me" with Wendy as part of the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama, Uncontrollably Fond.

Wendy (Hangul: 웬디) was born Son Seung-wan[49] (Hangul: 손승완, Hanja: 孫勝完) on February 21, 1994 in Seongbuk-dong, Seoul, South Korea.[42][50] Wendy Son is her English name, which she studied under while attending Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill, Greater Toronto, Ontario, where she also performed with the school's show choir, Vocal Fusion.[51]

In 2010, she auditioned for and became a finalist in the "Koreaboo: Cube Entertainment Global Auditions 2011". She was cast by S.M. Entertainment in 2012 after auditioning at the S.M. Global Audition in Canada.[52][53] On March 14, 2014, Wendy released the sound track of Mnet's drama Mimi, titled "Because I Love You".[6] Wendy also collaborated with rapper Yuk Jidam for the song "Return", which is the sound track for KBS2's Who Are You: School 2015, which was released on June 8, 2015.[54][55] She released another song "Let You Know" for the soundtrack of JTBC's drama D-Day on October 16.[56] On March 4, 2016, she released a duet with Eric Nam titled "Spring Love" as part of S.M. Entertainment's SM Station project.[57][58] In July, she released a duet with Seulgi called "Don't Push Me" for the soundtrack of the KBS2 drama, Uncontrollably Fond.

Joy (Hangul: 조이) was born Park Soo-young (Hangul: 박수영, Hanja: 朴秀英[59][60]) on September 3, 1996 in Seoul, South Korea.[42][47]

During grade school, she performed K-rock band Cherry Filter's "Flying Duck" which marked the beginning of her aspiration to become a singer.[61] She auditioned and was cast by S.M. Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012.[62] She graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul in February 2015.[63] In 2015, Joy gained public interest by joining the fourth season of reality show We Got Married, where she was paired with BtoB member Yook Sung-jae.[64] She and Yook won Best Couple at the MBC Entertainment Awards with Joy winning the award for 2015's New Star of the Year.[65] They also released a duet single titled "Young Love".

Yeri (Hangul: 예리) was born Kim Ye-rim (Hangul: 김예림, Hanja: 金藝琳) on March 5, 1999 in Seoul, South Korea.[47][66][67]

In 2011, she was cast by S.M. Entertainment and was introduced as a new member to the group on March 10, 2015.[20] From May 9, 2015 to November 14, 2015, Yeri hosted the MBC music program, Show! Music Core.[68] Yeri currently attends Hanlim Multi Art School. Yeri is also good friends with actress Kim Sae-ron and Akdong Musician's Suhyun. She likes the American singer Ariana Grande, and covered her song Almost Is Never Enough on the group's official Instagram account. In July 2016, Yeri was the female lead in the music video for J-Min and Shim Eun-jee's "Way Back Home", which was released as part of the single project SM Station.[69]

Red Velvet has also won a total of 22 music program awards. On March 27, 2015, 7 months after their official debut, the band received their first number-one win on South Korean music program Music Bank with the debut EP "Ice Cream Cake". The following weekend, the song achieved number-one wins on Show! Music Core and Inkigayo.
