Balwinder Singh Bhunder is an Indian politician, currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, from the state of Punjab. He is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal party.[1] He is a former MLA from sardulgarh,Distt.MANSA. He served as Cabinet minister for agriculture in 1977-80. (Member, Punjab Legislative Asembly)

Biography

He was born September 20, 1944 in the Village Bhunder, Sardulgarh, Mansa district in the state of Punjab, to Sardar Boota Singh and Shrimati Surjit Kaur. He is married to Shrimati Balwant Kaur.[1] They have two sons, Balraj Singh And Dilraj Singh. His son Balraj singh died in 2007 at the age of 40.

Political career

1964-72 Village Sarpanch 1972-77, 1977–80, 1980–85, 1985–87 and 2002-07 Member, Punjab Legislative Asembly 1977-80 Cabinet Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Soil Conservation, Government of Punjab 1997 Chairman, Agriculutre Marketing Board, Punjab (Mandi Board, Punjab) with Cabinet Minister rank April 1998 Elected to Rajya Sabha 1998-99 Member, Committee on Food, Civil Supplies and Public Distribution Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Argiculutre July 2010 Elected to Rajya Sabha August 2010 onwards Member, Select Committee to the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2010 Sept. 2010 onwards Member, Committee on Water Resources. He Was imprisoned for six months during the Emergency; participated in agitations for the welfare of farmers; was jailed four times in connection with farmers' agitations; President, All India Kisan Wing, Shiromani Akali Dal; General Secretary, Shiromani Akali Dal.
