The Irish St Leger Trial Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs (2,816 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August.

History

The event was originally called the Ballycullen Stakes. It was formerly classed at Listed level, and it used to be held at Leopardstown. For a period it was contested over 1 mile and 1 furlong, and it took place in late July. The race was extended by a furlong and switched to late August in 1994. It was increased to 1 mile and 6 furlongs in 1995.

The Ballycullen Stakes was staged at the Curragh in 2000 and 2001, and it was transferred to Fairyhouse in 2002. It returned to the Curragh in 2006, and went back to Fairyhouse in 2009. Its present spell at the Curragh began in 2010.

The race became known as the Irish St Leger Trial Stakes in 2011. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 2012.[1]

The race serves as a trial for the following month's Irish St Leger. The last horse to win both races in the same year was Order of St George in 2015.
