Azmi Haq

Azmi Haq (born in Lahore, Pakistan) is a Pakistani Canadian political advisor.

Career

Azmi Haq served as an Additional Federal Secretary and consultant to the former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.[1] Haq has also worked with Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Between 2006 and 2008, Haq served as Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Outreach for Ontario’s former Deputy Premier, the Honourable George Smitherman.[2] Haq is a staunch commentator on Pakistani politics and often publishes opinion pieces[3] for Pakistan's leading news daily The Nation. Haq is also a political commentator on international affairs in Canadian broadcast radio and television [4][5][6][7][8][9] [10][11] and is often interviewed by the Pakistan Television Corporation on socio-political and arts related issues [12]

Haq has also played leading roles in numerous television series for Pakistan Television Corporation,[13] and created shows for Showcase[14] and the CBC.[15][16] He is working on a feature screenplay, The Red Bazaar.[16]

In February 2012, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Haq as head of his Strategic Media Committee [17]

Haq is the Executive Producer of Salon Camden, an urban cultural project that provides an interactive space for citizens to come together over dinner and wine to share opinions and ideas about the city's changing urban landscape.[18][19] Featured speakers have included India's former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, John Tory, Maytree Foundation CEO Ratna Omidvar, Canada's former Minister of Foreign Affairs the Honourable Pierre Pettigrew, former Ontario Deputy Premier Honourable George Smitherman, the Honourable Jason Kenney, and ROM's former CEO William Thorsell.[20] Salon Camden is one of a growing number of salons being held throughout North America.[21] Salon Camden also brings youth and academics together through the Camden File Project to discuss pressing urban issues.[22] The first Camden File Project salon was held in 2010 in collaboration with NOW Magazine on the topic "Streets of Toronto: Who's Space is it Anyway?"[23] Salon Camden also launched a series of global salons in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Tokyo, Japan; Azmi Haq was appointed as a Toronto Ambassador for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.[24]
