Azmat Tarin
Azmat Tarin is a Pakistani career banker. He has been the President and CEO of Silkbank Limited, since October 2008.[1] He has been called one of Pakistan's 'Top Ten Banking Barons' by the press.[2]
Azmat Tarin was born in 1963 in a Pathan family settled in Lahore, Pakistan. He was born to retired Colonel Dr. Jamshaid Ahmed Tarin and Mrs Mumtaz Tarin. He is the younger brother of Shaukat Tarin, former Finance Minister of Pakistan.
Azmat Tarin is a Formanite and graduated in Economics and Journalism. He completed his MBA in Management Sciences in 1991 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
He is a career banker with a total work experience of over 25 years. He started his career in branch operations in Lincoln Savings in California in 1989.
Subsequently, he moved to Saudi American Bank at Riyadh where he was involved in a project of centralizing operations. He also attended the Management Associate program at the Saudi American Bank.
His first banking assignment in Pakistan was with Union Bank Limited from 1999 to 2006 as Director Retail Banking where he was a key member of the core team that turned around the bank into one of the most profitable banks of the country. In addition, he served on the Board of Union Leasing from 2001 to 2006.
In 2007, he, along with Mr. Shaukat Tarin, formed Sinthos Capital Advisors Pakistan Limited, the company that put together the consortium of international investors consisting of Bank Muscat, IFC and Nomura for the acquisition of Silkbank.
Mr. Azmat Tarin was inducted into the Board of the Bank in April 2008. He served as an Executive Director and was elevated in October 2008 by the Board of Directors to the position of President and CEO.
As President of SilkBank, he was successful in turning around the bank from a loss making institution to a fully capital compliant profitable bank. Azmat Tarin has also set up Mumtaz Tarin Medical Clinic in Lahore where free treatment, ultrasound and medicines are provided to poor patients.
