'Ashok Chakradhar' is a renowned Hindi poet, writer and a media personality. He has been a professor and head of the department of Hindi at Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University). After serving for 29 years, he took voluntary retirement to focus on working towards the propagation and development of the Hindi (Hindustani) language. In 2007 he became the Hindi coordinator at the Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) at the University of Delhi and in 2009 was appointed as the Vice Chairman of Hindi Academy, Government of Delhi and as the Vice Chairman of the Kendriya Hindi Shikshan Mandal, Ministry of HRD, Government of India. He is a celebrated poet, widely known for his unique style of poetry.

He was awarded the Padma Shri by Government of India in 2014 and Yash Bharti by Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2016.

Early and personal life

Chakradhar was born in Khurja, Uttar Pradesh, in India. His ancestors hailed from a village called Sunahara in Bulandshahar district in Uttar Pradesh. His father Radhey Shyam 'Pragalbh' was a well-known Hindi poet and his mother Kusum 'Pragalbh' is from Iglas, Uttar Pradesh, in India. Chakradhar was initially named Ashok Sharma. Since 1972, He is known as Ashok Chakradhar. Chakradhar's father died in 1999, and his father in law Kaka Hathrasi died in 1995 Chakradhar is an alumnus of SMJEC Inter College, Khurja, Bagla College, Hathras, and Kishori Raman College, Mathura. He later attended the Department of Hindi at the University of Delhi. He has a younger brother, Arvind Babbal who is Film Director in Teleserials.

Chakradhar is married to Dr. Bageshri. The couple have two children, their son Anurag Chakradhar lives in Australia and there as his daughter Sneha Chakradhar is an Bharatnatyam Dancer. He completed his MA, M Lit, Ph-D (Hindi) and received a post-doctoral fellowship from the University Grants Commission for research on ‘Navsaakshar Sahitya ke Aayam’.

Career

He is a retired professor, Hindi Department at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi. He has been actively associated with radio and television and has scripted a number of dramas, satires and poems for children. He has appeared in some television soaps like "Chhoti Si Asha with Sandhya Mridul on Sony TV and has hosted the show Wah Wah!! for SAB TV. He has also acted in various television serials. He has performed in Hindi [Kavi Sammelan for several decades. He also writes Bal-Geet. He has represented all classes of society in his poetry.

For the past four decades Prof. Chakradhar has been working consistently for radio and television. He has written, directed and produced many television feature films, such as ‘Gulabri’, ‘Jeet Gee Chhanno’, ‘Master Deepchand, ‘Hai Musaddi’ and ‘Teen Nazaare’ (for DD), ‘Bitiya’ (for NFDC), documentary films like ‘Pangu Giri Langhe’, ‘Gora Hat Jaa’, ‘Vikaas kee Lakeerein’ and television serials such as ‘Bhor Tarang’, ‘Dhhai Aakhar’, ‘Bua Bhateejee’ and ‘Bol Basanto’.has collaborated with eminent artists in the fields of music and dance and penned lyrics for songs such as the Sadbhaavana Geet "Gunje Gagan Mein" composed by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and the Jhanda Geet "Saare vatan ka pyara", composed by Pt. Vinay Chandra Maudgalya. Chakradhar is considered to be a pioneer in popularising poetry on mainstream television. His poetry based shows like Kahakahe, Isaliye Baudam Ji, Newzee Countdown, Wah Wah, Parda Uthata Hai and Chale Aao Chakradhar Chaman Mein have received immense appreciation from their viewers. He has been appointed as the Chairman of the jury of ‘Jagran Film Festival, Sirifort 2011. Chakradhar is a nationally and internationally acclaimed writer, with numerous publications ranging from academic writing, fiction and poetry, literature for adult education to weekly newspaper columns. He has published over 20 books of poems, 5 books on literary criticism, 9 essay collections, 7 plays, 4 books for children, 17 in the field of adult education, 2 screenplays and 2 novels. He has translated 3 books and has been the editor of 5 magazines and journals. His books were published by publishers such as Macmillan, Penguin, Diamond, Vani, Radhakrishna, NBT, NCERT, Kitab Ghar, Campfire and Rajpal.

He has taken voluntary retirement from Jamia Milia Islamia in 2004.

He wrote story of Jamuna Kinare (1983), a Braj Bhasha language feature film[1] which made by his father-in-law Kaka Hathrasi[2] under the banner of "Kaka Hathrasi Films Production" and produced, directed and music composed by his brother-in-law Dr. Laxminarayan Garg[3][4]
