Armacell International S.A., based in Luxembourg, produces flexible insulation foams for the equipment-insulation market.[3][4]
Company structure
Armacell employs approx. 2,600 people worldwide and follows a strategy of internationalisation with 23 manufacturing plants in 16 [5][6][7] countries on four continents. With production facilities in China, Thailand, India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.[8]
Sustainability
Armacell is a founder member of the European Industrial Insulation Foundation(EiiF), whose purpose is to promote the use of optimised insulation systems in industrial plants.
Armacell is the first manufacturer of flexible technical insulation materials to present environmental product declarations (EPDs) in June 2015. The EPDs are based on an independent life cycle assessment (LCA). Environmental product declarations are becoming more and more important in the construction industry: they provide a transparent, independent and reproducible analysis of the environmental impacts of construction products and give detailed information with sound data and figures. As a ‘sustainability passport’ EPDs form the basis for designing green buildings in accordance with certification schemes such as LEED, BREEAM or DGNB.[9]
To put an exact figure on the energy-saving potential of insulating heating and hot-water pipes, Armacell commissioned the University of Kassel (Zentrum für umweltbewusstes Bauen), a research centre devoted to studying sustainable building techniques and materials, to perform a scientific study. Based on their findings and additional in-house studies in 2014, Armacell became the world`s first manufacturer of flexible technical insulation materials to present a comprehensive ecobalance Life-cycle assessment (LCA) in 2009.[10]
The majority of locations are certified in accordance with the international environmental standard ISO 14000 – and all European plants are certified.
Innovations
Armacell operates four R&D centres around the globe. While process technology and material formula R&D is centralised in Münster, Germany, Armacell’s research units in Mebane, North Carolina, USA, Thimister-Clermont, Belgium, and Guangzhou, China, focus on product R&D.
The company holds 200 active patents (pertaining to 62 patent families and protecting 13 product groups and products), with 176 patents awarded between 2010 and 2013. Armacell has led the industry to higher and higher standards by continuously optimising its products, implementing new, cutting edge technologies and developing innovative, cost-efficient solutions for specific demands.[11]
Businesses
The company operates within two main businesses: Advanced Insulation and Engineered Foams.
The Advanced Insulation [12] business develops flexible insulation foam products for the insulation of mechanical equipment in markets where energy distribution is required, such as in commercial and residential construction, industrial applications, and the oil and gas industry.
The Engineered Foams [13] business develops light foams for use in a wide range of end markets such as the automotive, industrial and wind energy. The Engineered Foams business addresses the needs of a number of markets and applications where weight and robustness are of critical importance.
History
Armacell, the successor company to Armstrong World Industries’ insulation products business was founded in 2000 following a management buyout. Armacell is a global company and is managed from its regional headquarters in Münster (EMEA), Chapel Hill, North Carolina (Americas) and Singapore (APAC/India).
In 1954, the company invented Armaflex, the first flexible insulation product.
2015 The investment firms Blackstone and KIRKBI A/S buy Armacell 2015 Armacell acquires business of Industrial Thermo Polymers Limited (ITP), a leading Canadian manufacturer of extruded polyethylene insulation products strengthening of market position in polyethylene insulation foams in North America 2015 Armacell acquires OneFlex, a leading Turkish insulation materials manufacturer and expands its footprint across the growth regions of Middle East, Africa and Southeastern Europe 2014 Armacell strengthens its commitment in Korea by taking over Armacell Armatech, the leading supplier of technical insulation materials for the HVAC/R industry. 2013 The British investment company Charterhouse Capital Partners becomes new financial partner and owner of Armacell. 2012 Armacell further strengthens its presence in Asia by opening a new insulation plant in Cheonan in South Korea.[14]
