Arlington's Great Meadows is a 183-acre meadow located just off the Minuteman Bikeway in Lexington, Massachusetts. The meadow was acquired by Arlington in 1871 for use as a water storage area, and did not open to the public until 2002. As of 2014, more than 400 species of plants and animals live there.[1]

History

Great Meadows was purchased in 1871 and primarily used as a water storage area to prevent flooding to nearby areas.[1] It has become a popular recreational spot, especially since the opening of the adjacent Minuteman Bikeway in 1992.[2] On April 23, 2008, a fire struck AGM, damaging nine acres of upland forest near a nursing home.[3] A year later, on April 17, 2009, AGM was hit with another fire, injuring two firefighters and coming as close as three feet to homes.[4]
