Arcenciel
Not to be confused with the newspaper Arc-en-Ciel.
arcenciel, is a Lebanese non-profit, apolitical and non-confessional NGO[1][2][3] created in response to the Lebanese civil war in 1985. It participates in sustainable development and was recognized as a public utility in 1995 by the Lebanese Presidential Decree N⁰7541.
History
arcenciel was created in 1984-1985 during the Civil War due to the increase in numbers of Lebanese people living with disabilities. With no social or governmental services available in the country at the time, large numbers of disabled people suddenly became confined to their homes. Within this context, arcenciel was founded to help integrate disabled people and teach them skills to re-build their lives.
In 2005, arcenciel's mission changed to provide services to all marginalized individuals and communities with 75% of its workforce facing a mental, physical or social difficulty serving 80,000 people with 2.6 million services in 2014 alone.
