American Art is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering all aspects of past and present American visual art. The interdisciplinary journal has the fine arts as its primary focus, but all aspects of American visual culture are covered, which include popular culture, public art, film, electronic multimedia, and decorative arts and crafts, using any method of investigation, from traditional formalism to analyses of social context. It is published by the University of Chicago Press and was known until 1991 as Smithsonian Studies in American Art.
