Alex Charles Henshall (born 15 February 1994) is an English footballer who last played for Kilmarnock. He is a winger.

Career

Manchester City

Henshall joined Manchester City from Swindon Town on 10 June 2010, after being named on the Swindon substitute's bench twice. Henshall spent eight years at Swindon Town as part of the academy setup before joining Manchester City at the age of 16 for an undisclosed fee.[2][3][4] He made his debut for the City academy on 25 July, and won a penalty which started off an 8–0 rout against German side Empor Berlin.[5] City coach Scott Sellars said that Henshall "was a real threat" and "looks like a real talent".[6]

At the end of the 2013–14 season, Henshall was released by the club upon the expiry of his contract.[7]

Chesterfield (loan)

On 30 January 2013, Sky Sports reported that Coventry City were considering a loan move for Henshall.[8] On 22 February 2013, Henshall joined Chesterfield on a one-month-loan-deal.[9] He made his debut on 23 February, replacing Jay O'Shea in the 53rd minute of a 1–0 defeat at home to league leaders Gillingham.[10] He made his full debut three days later, starting in a 0–0 draw at home to Aldershot Town, although he was replaced at half-time by Jack Lester.[11] On 28 March, his loan deal was extended by Chesterfield until the end of the season.[12] On 29 April, his loan deal ended and he returned to Manchester City.[13]

Bristol Rovers (loan)

On 17 October, along with Birmingham City defender Will Packwood, he signed on a month-long loan for League Two club Bristol Rovers.[14] Upon arrival, Rovers manager John Ward said that "Alex comes looking for an opportunity to get his career going again, "We've spoken to the guys at Manchester City and he is another player that they have high hopes for. "He obviously would like to ignite his career in the Premier League with Manchester City, which is an extremely difficult thing for a young player to do. "He is an ambitious young man and I admire his desire to come out in a bid to improve his own career. He's quite direct in his play and likes to run at defenders."[15] He made his debut two days later, replacing Ryan Brunt in the 63rd minute of a 1–0 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers.[16] In the following game on 22 October, he scored his first professional career goal in a 2–1 defeat away to Accrington Stanley.[17] After making two appearance and scoring once for the club, it announced that Henshall will have his loan spell with Bristol Rovers extended.[18]

Ipswich Town

On 24 March 2014, Henshall joined Championship side Ipswich Town on a youth loan until the end of the 2013–14 season.[19]

After leaving Manchester City, Henshall joined Ipswich Town as a free agent by signing a two-year contract on 27 June 2014.[20] Henshall said: "Ipswich was always at the top of my list when I knew I would be moving on and it was an easy decision for me to make. I spoke to my family and my agent but it was a no-brainer really. I know what the manager wants from me and I like working under him and with the Club moving forward in the right direction, everything felt right."[21] He made his debut for the club on 12 August, starting in a League Cup match which Ipswich lost 1–0 to Crawley Town in extra-time.[22]

Henshall joined Championship's rivals Blackpool in a month-long loan deal on 9 January 2015.[23] Henshall made his Blackpool debut, coming on as a substitute for Connor Oliver in the 61st minutes, in a 1–0 win over Millwall the next day.[24] After making two appearances for Blackpool, Henshall returned to his parent club after suffering a knee injury.[25]

In February 2016, Henshall left Ipswich, with his contract being terminated by mutual consent.[26]

Kilmarnock

On 30 March 2016, Henshall signed for Scottish Premiership club Kilmarnock, agreeing a contract until the end of the season.[27] He was released by the club at the end of his contract.[28]

International career

Henshall made his England under-16 debut on 15 October 2009, in a 1–0 win against Wales.[29] He made his debut for the under-17 team on 3 August 2010, in a 5–0 win against Finland,[30] in the first round of the Nordic Tournament, which England went on to win by defeating Sweden 2–1 in the final, with Henshall playing 67 minutes before being substituted.[31] He scored his first goal for the side on 27 February 2011, in a 2–2 draw against host nation Portugal in the Algarve tournament.[32] He played in all of England's games at the 2011 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship, helping England reach the semi-finals.[33] He also represented England at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup, playing in the final group-stage game, a 2–0 win against Uruguay,[34] and helping England to reach the quarter-final stage.[35]
