Ahold Czech Republic, a. s. is a division of the Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize group, operating in the Czech republic. The company entered the market in 1990 as Euronova a. s. Ahold Czech Republic is responsible for running the supermarket chain Albert, with about 330 locations.
History
The first Ahold Czech Republic, then still Euronova, store was opened in 1991, under the brandname Mana. This Mana outlet in Jihlava was the first supermarket in the Czechoslovakia.[2]
In 2005, Ahold took over 56 outlets of the Austrian-based Julius Meinl supermarket, which left the Czech market, and subsequently remodelled them to their Albert brand.[3] In 2009, the company dropped the Hypernova brand, re-branding all hypermarket operations to the name Albert Hypermarket.[4]
In March 2014 Ahold Czech Republic a.s. acquired 49 stores from Spar, 36 hypermarkets and 14 supermarkets for 5.25 billion Czech Crowns 5.165.213.000,00 CZK).[5] With this move Albert is now the biggest supermarket chain in the Czech Republic, totaling 330 outlets.[6] The Prague TV guide mentioned in 2015 both the original pioneering and current outdatedness of the Albert stores.[4]
