Akçakale (Arabic: تل أبيض) Tal Abyaḍ, ethnic Arab town and District of Şanlıurfa Province, in southeastern Turkey.
It lies on the road TUR-D-885. Akçakale forms a divided city with Tell Abyad in Syria, maintaining a border crossing. In October 2014, reporters for the Sunday Herald newspaper in Scotland, Sheren Khalel and Matthew Vickery, documented an Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant presence in the town, due to the porous nature of the border between the Turkish border town and Tell Abyad, which has been under ISIS control[3] until June 15, 2015, when the city was retaken by Kurdish People's Protection Units and the Free Syrian Army.
The mayor is Abdülhakim Ayhan (AKP).[4]
2012 Syrian border clash
On October 3, 2012, the town of Akçakale in Turkey was hit by shells from across the Syrian border in Tal Abyad, killing five civilians.[4][5]
