Adnan Taletovich is a Croatian model, fashion photographer, and fashion designer.[1][2] Taletovich began his professional modeling career in earnest in 1990,[3] when a model-agent spotted him in Italy and offered to fly him to Paris, France for several photo tests.[4] After participating in high-profile modeling campaigns in the 1990s[1][2] for designers such as Thierry Mugler, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, and Valentino,[3] he went on to win Mr. Photogenic at the 2001 Manhunt International contest.[5] Fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld used Taletovich as a model in much of his work in the 1990s,[6] particularly from 1992 to 1997.[6]

With much of his work influenced by black and white Hollywood films, in 2002 Taletovich began creating his own fashion photography. A number of his photography shows have benefited non-profit organizations such as the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children,[6][7] with reviews by publications such as TimeOut.[6] In 2011 as part of his Chanel Culture Exhibition Shanghai, Lagerfeld staged a private exhibition at 18 Gallery featuring his and Taletovich's earlier work.[8][9] After playing silent film star John Gilbert in the short film Return to Babylon in 2000,[10] Taletovich also had a role in the 2014 film Reincarnation for Chanel fashion house.[3] Taletovich continued to work as a photographer and model as of early 2015,[3] and he founded his own fashion line Adventuryx in 2012.[2][3]

Early life and background

Adnan Taletovich was born in Bosnia, moving to Croatia with his parents at three months of age.[4] After studying law with the intent of becoming an attorney,[4] in 1990 Taletovich moved from Croatia to Italy to pursue a career in modeling.[4] He was subsequently hired as a model for several small marketing campaigns in Rome and Milan.[4]

Taletovich began his professional modeling career in earnest in 1991,[3] when a model-agent spotted him in Italy and offered to fly him to Paris, France for several photo tests. The prints were seen by designer Thierry Mugler, leading to Taletovich being selected as a model in a major fashion show also featuring models such as Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, and Christy Turlington.[4]

After a short travel to Italy, Taletovich returned to Paris,[4] where he met designer Karl Lagerfeld in 1992.[6] Lagerfeld asked Taletovich to model for his then current perfume and clothes campaign,[4] and went on to have Taletovich[6] in the majority of his photo shoots from 1992 to 1997.[6] In particular, Taletovich modeled extensively for Lagerfeld's men's clothing campaign and "Photo KL" perfume,[4] and he also worked with Lagerfeld on photo shoots for Vogue.[4][3]

In 1995, Taletovich and model Nadja Auermann were featured as the main characters in "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," a gothic photo shoot[12] by Karl Lagerfeld. The photos were later featured in the 1995 art photo book Faust.[13]

Photographer Arthur Elgort selected Taletovich and model Claudia Schiffer to feature in his 1995 photo series "La Dolce Vita" commissioned for Valentino.[14] The photos were later published in Una Grande Storia Italiana Valentino Garavani, a fashion book.[4]

Stated Taletovich in 2009 about his 1990s work with Lagerfeld, "he told me that I reminded him of [silent movie star] Rudolph Valentino. Every shoot was very much acting and not just posing as a model. He would show me different [silent movies]... and then he would get many books and parts of old magazines and show me what he would like to have. We would try to get those feelings... that was the way we worked.”[6]

Reincarncartion

Beyond his work with Lagerfeld, in the 1990s Taletovich modeled for major campaigns and fashion shows for designers[4] such as Versace, Valentino, Gucci, Thierry Mugler, Gianfranco Ferre, Moschino,[3] Tom Ford,[1] Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, and Masatomo.[2] He modeled further campaigns for Jean Paul Gautier, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Olivier Strelli, Claude Montana, Dirk Bikkembergs, Hugo Boss, Armand Basi, Francesco Smalto, and Pierre Cardin.[4]

In the 1990s he modeled for fashion photographers such as Klaus Wickrath,[3] Tyen, Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Roberts, Albert Watson, and Arthur Elgort, among others.[4] On photoshoots he worked with models such as Helena Christensen, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell,[2] and Cindy Crawford.[1] In 1999 he played silent film star John Gilbert in the short film Return to Babylon.[10] After studying in the United States, in 2001 Taletovich moved back to Paris.[4]

Taletovich moved to Hong Kong in 2006, continuing to model and work on his own fashion photography.[6] While still based in Hong Kong,[6] in August 2009 Taletovich organized an art show at the Schoeni Art Gallery.[6] The show featured 45 black and white photographs shot by Lagerfeld[6] which were auctioned to benefit the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children,[6] also displaying them in Singapore and Shanghai.[3] The photo set featured Taletovich as a model in various Lagerfeld campaigns and arts projects, with shoots intended for publications such as Vogue and Interview.[6] Other models appearing in the collection included Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, and Kristen McMenamy. The show was positively reviewed by Bourree Lam of TimeOut:Hong Kong, who wrote that the photos are "dramatically lit, reflecting the influence of silent films on Lagerfeld’s works."[6]

Recent projects

Taletovich was featured as a predominant model in the March 2011 photography show Culture Chanel, which largely incorporated photography by Lagerfeld for the Chanel brand.[8] The Chanel cultural exhibition was opened at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art.[9] By early 2013 Taletovich had appeared in campaigns for a variety of perfume and fashion brands,[4] as well various television and magazine advertisements.[15] Particularly, he had appeared in advertisements for Paco Rabanne, Lacoste, Honda, Citroen Xantia, Lexus, Cliff, Mercedes, and Piaget. Taletovich had also modeled in magazines such as Men Magazine Spain, Vogue, Mondo Uomo, Details, Esquire, and Arena, and the GQ editions for the United States, Spain, and Japan.[4]

Taletovich was then cast as the night porter in the short film Reincarnation in 2014,[16] which debuted at the premiere of Chanel's Métiers d’art collection in Salzburg, Austria in late November of that year.[16] With original music and acting by Pharrell Williams,[16] shooting lasted two days under director Luc Besson in Paris, with Langerfeld serving as art director.[3] The film re-enacts Gabrielle Chanel's discovery of the Chanel trademark jacket, with Chanel portrayed by Geraldine Chaplin,[17] and Cara Delevingne appearing as a waitress.[3] Taletovich was occasionally modeling or appearing in television commercials and fashion campaigns as of 2015.[3] He has been featured on the cover of publications such as Azra, among others.[15]

Photography career

Taletovich moved to New York City in 1996 to study art, film, and photography, and later also studies in Los Angeles.[4] He spent four years studying at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and the Sanford Meisner Film Academy in the United States,[4] and in 2001 Taletovich moved back to Paris[4] and began focusing on his own fashion photography, with his recent studies into Hollywood influencing his work.[4] Afterwards moving for a half year to work on modeling and photography in Cape Town, South Africa,[4] Taletovich states that his years of work with Lagerfeld also influenced his style, explaining that “I learned photography from [Lagerfeld] silently, the way they treat people during the shoot. I never saw disagreements or shouting, no feelings of misunderstanding. Everything was like a Swiss watch or a German car.”[6] He also stated he picked up much of his "style, lighting, and composition" from Lagerfeld.[4]

Taletovich moved to Hong Kong in 2006, continuing to work on his own fashion photography.[6] After an initial show at the MEP gallery in Paris in 2010, in January 2011[7] Taletovich exhibited his photography in a new show titled Art Photos.'[7] The series also featured the photography of Karl Lagerfeld. The unpublished photos, some of which had been taken in the early 1990s in Monte Carlo and Paris with models such as Helena Christensen,[7] were displayed again later that month in the 18Gallery Shanghai,[7] and at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in April 2011.[11] By the end of 2012 Taletovich had also created fashion images for magazines like Tide, Soon, His Life, and Lime Hong Kong,[4] as well as brands such as Fashion Style, Granoff, Corleone Jeans, and Masatomo.[4] Taletovich continued to work as a photographer as of early 2015, occasionally modeling or appearing in television commercials and fashion campaigns.[3]

Design career

Adventuryx

Taletovich states he came to the decision to start a fashion line after taking part in a Shanghai fashion show in 2010.[1] He began working on a brand in 2011,[1] officially founding his own fashion label Adventuryx in late 2012.[3][4] He exhibited the very first collection at Dreft Fashion Week in Zagreb, Croatia, followed by shows in Sarajevo and Paris.[2] Initially sold in Saint-Tropez,[2] the first line featured shirts and jeans[1] made largely of organic cotton.[2] His fashion label was showcased in September 2013 during Paris Fashion Week, and he displayed the Adventuryx Spring/Summer 2014 Ready-To-Wear Collection[4] in what Purepeople called a "mixed and colorful show."[18]

In March 2014, Taletovich released his "Marco Polo" fashion collection for purchase,[1] debuting his line in Paris at the Tranoi fashion trade show.[1] According to Taletovich, the designs were "inspired by my travels through Asia... China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan."[2] He was working on new Adventuryx collections of jeans and shirts in early 2015.[3] With upcoming fashion trade shows for Adventuryx to be held in cities such as Paris, New York, London, and Tokyo, Taletovich has stated that he intends to open Adventuryx boutiques as well.[3]
