Adam Welsh (born 1987, Spennymoor, County Durham) is an English actor, musician, composer, and theatre director.

Early life

At the age of 11 he attended the Chorister School, Durham and then became a Music Scholar at Durham School [1] where he remained until 2005 when he moved to London to train as a performer at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.[2][3] Whilst at Mountview he was awarded the Lional Bart scholarship, a Dance and Drama award and was nominated for the Spotlight Prize in 2008.

Career

Welsh played 'Leaky' in the world premier of Skellig, the opera by Tod Machover directed by Braham Murray, at The Sage, Gateshead.[4][5] He was also the original 'Andy' in Dreamboats and Petticoats on tour and in London's West End. Dreamboats and Petticoats was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2010 [6][7]

In 2010 Welsh directed a sell-out production of Romeo and Juliet at the Chocolate Factory in London [8] for MokitaGrit.[9] Brenda Edwards, MBE,[10] was the movement director and the production featured Kyle McPhail,[11] as 'Romeo' and Esther Smith as 'Juliet'. It also featured Ben Freeman as the 'Prince' and Jennifer Biddall as 'Lady Capulet'.[12][13]

Welsh then toured Ireland and England with Druid Theatre Company and their production of The Silver Tassie, directed by the Tony Award Winning Garry Hynes.[14] In 2011 Welsh toured with The Silver Tassie to New York, where it played at the Lincoln Centre Festival alongside productions by the RSC and Peter Brook.[15][16]

In 2012 Welsh joined the National Theatre production of War Horse in London's West End where he remained until 2013.[17] Around that time Welsh founded the theatre company Dead Centre with Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd Their production LIPPY won 'best production' at the 2014 Irish Times Theatre Awards and Welsh was nominated for Best Sound Design [18] [19] LIPPY also won an Obie Award for Best Production in 2015 for its run at the Abrons Arts Center in New York City. In 2015 LIPPY had its London premier at the Young Vic Theatre in London[20] after touring internationally throughout 2014.[21]

Other recent work includes originating the role of 'Ernst' in Anya Reiss's adaption of Spring Awkening for Headlong Theatre [22] and at the end of 2015 Welsh played "Merlin" in Ella Hickson's play "Merlin" at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton. He is currently playing 'Hopper' [23] in the world premier of David Almond's 'The Savage' with Live Theatre in Newcastle.
