2014 Australia Day Honours
The Australia Day Honours 2014 were announced on 26 January 2014 by the Governor General of Australia, Quentin Bryce, AC, CVO.
The Australia Day Honours are the first major honour's list for a calendar year which are announced on Australia Day, 26 January. | Army | Corporal Michael Patrick Chalk | In the Tangi Valley, Afghanistan, Corporal Chalk's partnered patrol came under effective machine gun, sniper and small arms fire from an enemy force occupying dominating terrain. Corporal Chalk risked his life time and again by moving through open ground and enemy fire to support Afghan National Army soldiers, restoring order and confidence. His actions helped regain the initiative and undoubtedly saved lives. |
| Sergeant 'J' | Following an improvised explosive device explosion in a compound in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Sergeant J cleared safe paths to two casualties using only his bare hands and a mine prodder. He continued to clear and evacuate other members of the patrol to safety, discovering additional devices, recovering mission essential equipment and gathering intelligence. His actions undoubtedly saved lives. Sergeant J's gallantry in the most hazardous circumstances was of the highest order and in keeping with the finest traditions of the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force. |
