October
- 10 October – Portuguese legislative election, 1999: Ruling party PS and the Opposition ones conquer exactly 115 MPs, the first and (as of 2015) only time such a draw happened in the Third Republic. Considering the results, Prime Minister António Guterres (in office since 1995) is eventually appointed for a second term in office.
- 12 October – Portugal is awarded the hosting rights of UEFA Euro 2004.
