English teams were banned from Europe and the FA started a new cup for sides in the top two leagues

- Luton: Luton beat Everton, 2-1, Stoke, 4-1 Swindon, 2-1(aet). [1]
- Reading: Reading beat Queen's Park Rangers 3–1,[2] Oxford United 1–0, Nottingham Forest 2-1(aet), Bradford City 2-1(aet) and Coventry City on penalties after a 1-1 draw. [3][4]
