The movie is set in two time periods, with Mohanlal playing both Major Mahadevan and his father Major Sahadevan in the movie. The movie will also see him transition from a Major to a Colonel. Major Ravi was inspired to make this movie as a tribute to his father who saw action in the 1971 war. The movie is based on a true incident and explores the friendship and life of two army officials.[3] Mohanlal will be appearing in his fourth film as Major Mahadevan after Keerthi Chakra, Kurukshetra, and Kandahar.[4]

Allu Sirish, who is the younger brother of Allu Arjun was signed on for the role of Lt. Chinmay, an armoured tank commander, after talks with Rana Daggubati and Vijay Sethupathi did not materialize. Arunoday Singh will be portraying Lt Colonel Rana Sharif, a Pakistani whose role is inspired by a real life soldier of the Pakistani Frontier Force during the 1971 war. Mumbai based model Priyanka Agrawal was signed on to appear as Arunoday's wife and will be seen as a 65 year old and as her younger self. She is one of the two actresses in the film, with the makers on the lookout for Allu Sirish's pair.[5][6][7]

The shooting started on October 30 at Suratgarh in Rajasthan. Other shooting locations include Punjab, Kashmir and Uganda. Art director Saloo K George built huge sets resembling army camps and bunkers. Built in Kochi, they will be transported to Rajasthan. Rahul Subramaniam , Siddharth Vipin and Najim Arshad will be composing the music for this movie.[8][9] The first schedule was completed in 23 November 2016.[10]
