• 27 April – Roelof Frederik Botha, politician, is born in Rustenburg.
• 11 June – Athol Fugard, author and dramatist, is born in Middelburg, Cape.
• 12 June – Mimi Coertse, opera soprano, is born in Durban.
• 12 July – Sheena Duncan, member of the Anglican Church’s Challenge Group and Black Sash movement, is born in Johannesburg.

Deaths

• 19 June – Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje, intellectual, journalist, linguist, politician, translator and writer, dies in Kimberley at the age of 55.
• 15 July – Cornelis Jacobus Langenhoven, playwright, poet, journalist and politician, dies in Oudtshoorn aged 58.
• 30 December – Daisy de Melker (46), is hanged for the murder of her 20-year-old son Rhodes Cowle, who died on 5 March 1932 of arsenic poisoning.
