17th Street School
17th Street School was once part of the Westminster School District, located in Westminster, California and closed around the mid 1900's. As of 1940, Hoover Elementary School (which also closed later on) and 17th Street School were the only schools within the district.
Mendez v. Westminster
During the 1940's, a case, "Mendez v. Westminster" was filed against the Westminster School District from the Mendez as well as other districts within the area regarding the "White-only" rule. They sued the districts for forcing their kids to attend substandard schools and declining to let them go to 17th Street Elementary. The district first gave an offer to let the Mendez's kids to attend the school and no other Hispanics, but they declined the offer and kept standing up for rights. Finally, all the districts followed a rule where everyone, whether with different skin, could attend a school. Sylvia Mendez, who was one of many Hispanics who couldn't attend 17th Street School, was rewarded many times for her perseverance for an education, including meeting Barack Obama. Many art and books are related to this case.
