Úrsula von der Lippen
Úrsula von der Lippen (born 1944) is an Argentine artist known for her works of figurative art.
Biographical notes
She was born to German parents in 1944 in the city of Bernal, a suburb to the south of Buenos Aires. Her childhood home gave onto a sloping square overlooking the Río de la Plata. It was in this quiet area of fields and open meadows of her youth that von der Lippen became acquainted with horses, whose contact and company would turn into her lifelong passion. In fact, the milkman's cart, then drawn by horses, is one of her most cherished memories – when the milkman arrived, she recalls, he would hand over the reins to her and let her go for a ride on the driver's seat. This early communion with animals and landscape would later determine the leitmotiv of her inspiration as a painter.
Uschi Demaría, as she signs most of her work, studied painting in Pedro Ricci's Academy and later graduated from the Carlos Morel School of Fine Arts of the city of Quilmes. She then went on to study with several Argentine artists: Aldo Severi, Manuel Oliveira, Urribarri, Inchausti, Ludovico Pérez and finally Pérez Celis in 1973, in whose studio she met the poet Fernando Demaría, friend and admirer of the artist. Married in 1979, the couple has since shared their love for a quiet and simple life in constant contact with nature.
Von der Lippen's attitude as an artist has changed little over the years. Although a successful portrait painter as well, her interest continues to focus on the variety of the natural world as perceived in landscape, flowers and animals. It is the latter, she confesses, which arouse her most tender feelings of affection and compassion.
The bold and vivid colors of her paintings, which seem tailored to satisfy the subjects portrayed, find their source in the expressionistic genes of her German background. It is no coincidence that her favorite European artists – besides René Magritte – are Franz Marc and Emil Nolde, both among the foremost representatives of the Expresssionist movement in Germany. She believes that an artist's work are his or her most effective spokesmen. It is with this aim that she is exhibiting these paintings, hoping they can stand on their own, speak for themselves and appeal to the public. The noted art critic and founder of the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art, Rafael Squirru, published a poem in her honor in August 2009.
